A BIBLICAL BASIS FOR STEWARDSHIP
When most people hear the word “stewardship,” even believing Christians often think first about money. Scripture gives us a much bigger picture. Biblical stewardship begins with the recognition that everything belongs to God, and everything we have has been entrusted to us by him. David writes, “The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1). Our money, possessions, abilities, opportunities, relationships, and even our time ultimately belong to God. We’re not owners in the fullest sense. We are stewards, called to faithfully manage what he has placed in our hands.
That truth changes the way we think about giving. Christian generosity is not simply deciding how much of our money we are willing to give to God. Instead, we recognize that all we have already belongs to him, and we ask how he would have us use it.
Jesus regularly connected our use of earthly resources with the condition of our hearts. In Matthew 6:21, he says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Money is never merely financial. It often reveals what we value, what we trust, and where we find our security.
The Bible also teaches that stewardship should be marked by faithfulness. Jesus’ parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14–30 reminds us that God entrusts different resources and opportunities to different people, but he calls each of us to faithfully use what we have received. Paul makes a similar point in 1 Corinthians 4:2: “Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.”
For followers of Jesus, generosity is also a response to grace. Paul points to Christ himself as our ultimate example: “Though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). We do not give to earn God’s favor. We give because we have already received his immeasurable grace through Christ.
This is why biblical stewardship is ultimately about discipleship. We want every part of our lives, including our finances, to reflect our trust in God and our commitment to his kingdom.
